Counseling

What is counseling?

Contrary to what its name might suggest, counseling has nothing to do with giving advice!

Counselling is a process designed to support individuals in navigating life’s challenges by fostering a deep understanding of their thoughts, emotions, and actions. Unlike traditional psychology or psychotherapy, counselling focuses on helping individuals face difficult situations by making meaningful "contact" with what they think, feel, and how they act. Rather than offering advice or solutions, a counsellor practises non-judgmental, empathetic listening, guiding clients to discover their own inner resources to manage their circumstances.

Perhaps the most important assumption of the integrative counselor's work is: "I believe that each of us possesses, within ourselves, the resources to feel better and be happy".

When wondering whether or not counselling could be beneficial for you, ask yourself if any of these common examples resonate with you:

"I’ve been feeling emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in a cycle of loneliness, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts that I can’t seem to shake."

"I’m struggling to find my direction in life—feeling unfulfilled at work and unsure of my true purpose."

"I’m dealing with difficult emotional conflicts."

"Work has become a source of stress for me. I’m having trouble managing my workload, dealing with colleagues, or finding the confidence to speak up."

"I’m going through a major life change, and I need support to navigate the emotional and practical shifts that come with it."

When should I turn to a counselor?

We turn to a counselor when stress, fear or anxious situations begin to cause us to no longer enjoy life as we would like to. There are many circumstances in which a person may begin to perceive the need for change, and to focus on it, here are some examples of situations in which going to a counselor can be helpful.

- Need for support at times of mood inflection (e.g., feelings of loneliness, generalized anxiety, repetitive and intrusive thoughts)

- Difficulties in redefining my life's orientation (e.g., finding one's purpose in life, job dissatisfaction, lack of sense of self-fulfillment).

- I feel deep emotional conflicts (e.g., the end of a relationship, difficulties with a family member, or with the partner)

- I have difficulties at work (e.g., stress management at work, difficulties in relationships with colleagues or superiors, improved public speaking skills)

- I need support to change during a major life transitions (work, emotional relationships, parent-child relationships, etc.).
